-
- A new booklet published by the Agency for Health Care Policy and Research
- (AHCPR) can help consumers choose health insurance that best meets their needs
- and their budgets.
- "Checkup on Health Insurance Choices" was developed for Americans facing
- health insurance decisions for the first time and those needing to reassess
- their current coverage or find a new plan. The booklet is also intended for
- persons who can afford insurance but who have chosen not to buy it. The
- booklet describes the sources of group and individual health insurance and
- the three major types of plans; fee-for-service (the traditional plan), health
- maintenance organizations (HMO's) and preferred provider organizations (PPO).
- Also included are insurance shopping tips, definitions, a quiz, a checklist of
- important services, pertinent questions to ask when evaluating plans, and a
- worksheet for determining the reader's best insurance buy.
- Free copies of "Checkup on Health Insurance" are available through the
- AHCPR Publications Clearinghouse at P.O. Box 8547, Silver Springs, MD 20907.
- A toll free number, 1-800-358-9295, is in operation weekdays, 9 AM to 5 PM
- eastern time.
